Diabetes mellitus is a hormone-related disorder that is currently gripping a huge chunk of population throughout the globe. Diabetes is actually a condition that is caused either by the fact that insulin has stooped being produced in the body or that the cells have grown resistant to the effect of insulin. Whatever be the cause, the result is just the same – heightened sugar levels in the blood. We all know that the body gets its prime energy from sugar sources and from carbohydrates. When, due to the lack of insulin, sugar does not get metabolized, naturally, the body feels extremely weak and fatigued. High blood sugar level can lead to further conditions like obesity, cardiac problems and faulty lever conditions. There are 2 main kinds of Diabetes, type I and Type II.
Type II Diabetes
In this type of disorder, the cells in the body grow resistant to the action of insulin. The highest affected are the lever cells. Now, the lever has the action of storing the extra carbohydrates. When the lever cells grow resistant to insulin, sugar is no more absorbed properly, as a result of which, sugar levels in the blood increase hugely. Other cells that are equivalently affected are the muscle cells and the fat cells of the body. Lack of absorption of sugar in muscles results in fatigue and weakness throughout the body. The effect on fat cells generally results in obese conditions.
Type I Diabetes
Unlike type II diabetes, here, the Islets of Langerhans stop producing insulin completely. This results in an acute condition wherein, sugar levels in the blood constantly remain high and doses of artificial insulin need to be injected before every meal of just afterwards, in order to prevent chronic conditions. Tendency of frequent urination, frequent thirst and abdominal pain are some of the symptoms of diabetes.
The hormone Insulin
Insulin is the hormone that is primarily responsible for metabolism of sugar in the body. It is produced in the pancreas. Lack of insulin causes unnaturally high levels of sugar in the blood.
